My physical education philosophy is much different than most teachers. PE's overall goal is to create children who are active throughout the rest of their lives. It is apparent, in my opinion, that the generic teachings of PE need to be changed. As a result, I am strongly advocating an outdoor education curriculum is best suited to meet our goal, developing physically active kids who become physically active adults.
I believe the answer is found by teaching kids the skills, knowledge, and values of how to recreate in our great outdoors. While developing my own curriculum at the four different schools I taught physical education at, I worked hard to insert my outdoor education beliefs as I saw fit.
My outdoor education mentor is Derek Warner, who teachers at Grand Haven Public Schools, and I believe has the best PE program in the state.
